Frozen AC System

We get many calls that indicate a frozen air conditioner unit. If a unit is completely iced over, our technicians cannot work on it until the ice is gone. Before you give us a call, we will give you some things to look for.To start, with, turn your system off! By turning your system off, it will no longer continue to ice up. If the unit that is iced up is over expensive flooring or carpet that absolutely cannot get wet, be sure you put towels down to soak up any of the ice that may melt. One of the first things you want to look for is to see if any airflow is blocked. If there is an obstruction in the vent, it might cause ice to build. If warm air cannot pass through, then ice may start to form. The first place you want to check is your air filter. Is your air filter too clogged up with dust or pet hair? If this occurs, warm air will not be able to pass through. If your air filter seems to be okay and nothing is blocking your airflow, it is possible that the refrigerant in your unit is low. We reminded you a couple of months ago that R22 refrigerant is being phased out. So if your system is low on Freon and your system uses R22, it will be a very costly repair. If your system has the newer Freon, the Freon cost will not be as high. If Freon is low, there is likely a leak somewhere in your system. Take a look at all fittings and connections to make sure they are secure. Sometimes a leak is not able to be seen by the naked eye. If that is the case, one of our technicians will have to come out and perform a leak test. With the method they use, we will be able to get to the bottom of the leak precisely and let you know right away what the repair cost will be. Keep in mind that until you start adding Freon back into your system, we will not know how much Freon is missing. This means that the exact cost of Freon may not be able to be calculated until the repair is done.If your air conditioning coils are dirty, it can also cause ice to form on your unit. This can be because of debris that obstructs the intake. It may be hard for a non-professional to really assess, but you are welcome to take a look at it before you give us a call.
